Sunday July 17, 2016

Unfortunately, Davis must have eaten something that didn't sit right with him last night.  The mountain of pineapple came back up with a vengeance.  Despite intermittant vomiting, he continued to spot monkeys in the trees behind the bungalow.  He fell asleep at 7PM and slept all night.  Thank goodness he was well in the morning.
The staff caught wind that we were here for our 20th anniversary and had a cake for us at dinner.  Kudos.  Tara felt bad that they went to so much trouble as I was back at the bungalow with Davis.  Tara and Lawton brought my dinner to the room and I got to have a piece of the cake which was super moist and filled with guava jelly.  Mmmmmmmm!!
We were scheduled to go out on the ocean today and snorkel at Cano island.  With Davis' illness so fresh, we decided to skip the day in the boat bouncing around and spent the day at the beach.  Cool and sunny, the beach turned out to be a great idea.  We had the entire beach to ourselves.  Cool drinks and a hammock was relaxing.  The surf and current was pretty rough as Lawton and I discovered as we were tossed around and slammed into the bottom.  Lawton absolutely loved just hanging out at the edge of the surf and having the waves lift him and transport him across the beach.
Lunch was served on the beach and consisted of the Costa Rican version of jambalaya along with a strange potato salad that contained beets.  Didn't like the salad very much, but the homemade tortilla chips with black bean sauce was pretty good.  Dessert, a version of a brownie that was more like cake and had a hint of coffee.  Not bad, but the texture was odd.
The highlight of the day was spotting whales from the beach!!  Humpbacks were within a mile of shore moving north.  As they got close to the point at the end of the beach, one breeched the surface!!  Truly unbelievable!
Beach to Ourselves

We spent the afternoon hanging with the other people at the hotel.  A family from Alaska had a son about Davis and Lawton's age, so mom and dad became "personas no importante."  There is a family from Switzerland here turning a conference in Orlando into a three week western hemisphere excursion.  After what they read about standing in the lines at Disney in July, they smartly choose to spend time here in Central America.  There is also a couple from Spain.  Very nice, but they take every opportunity to sport displays of affection.  I hope they are newlyweds or that his doctor reduces his testosterone supplementation.
Pool Time!
At the end of the day, almost everyone at the hotel went to a cliffside bar looking out at the sunset.  Appetizers and drinks were served, but the real attraction was the incredible colors in the sky as the sun descended.
Sunset Over Cano Island
Dinner was grilled Mahi-Mahi and pasta with a interesting carrot soup.  It was not our favorite of the meals we had, but not bad.  I think the multiple drinks on the cliff tempered our appetite.  One drink, a concoction of a local liquor, orange liquor, fresh limes and sugar on the rim was pretty good. Tasted like the local version of hard lemonade.  A few of those could be dangerous.
Tri-Colored Salad

Tomorrow we say goodbye to Corcovado and on to Quepos.  The boys loved this place.  I hope the next place will be as wonderful.
Scarlet Macaws
Animals spotted today - humpback whales, spider monkeys, macaws, green parrots, flycatchers, a number of frogs, and an orange snake who greeted Tara on the walk to the bungalow (Davis was distraught that is was gone by the time she came back).
